Biology at USF

Outcomes

Graduates can pursue careers as biological researchers, conducting research in areas like genetics and ecology, or as biotechnologists, developing products in pharmaceuticals or agriculture. They can also work as environmental scientists, addressing issues such as pollution. 

Other options include roles in healthcare, pharmaceutical sales, science communication, biomedical technology, forensic science, quality control and education, where they can teach biology at various levels.

Research Opportunities

Students who graduate with a Biology major are exposed to traditional and laboratory courses and are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research. USF is a partner institution of the South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) which provides students with an opportunity to be involved in research projects on campus.

BRIN has been funded by the National Center for Research Resources (NIH) since 2001. They have several Cores (proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics and west core) with about 80 members.

Joseph E. Salsbury Science Center

The focus of your studies will take place in the Joseph E. Salsbury Science Center, which is the hub of USF's Natural Sciences program. The $3.3 million building addition and renovation serves as testament to USF's commitment to its mission—to develop mature Christians who are called to serve humankind through their personal attributes and knowledge.
